COMPANY / History

Thanks to so much support, we celebrate 20th anniversary of our founding. We really appreciate this great honor is supported by our customers, staff and factories. But “Glen Clyde” is still a young company. We hope to surprise, move and satisfy all our customers with our socks and keep making efforts to become a valuable company to produce valuable socks.

November 1992
The company started from one table and phone set in a workplace of a factory in Horihune Kita-ku, Tokyo, which we rented for 30,000 yen. No sales could be made for a long time without any clients. We had no knowledge on making products and always asked everything to a manager of the factory. Although he kept yelling at us “Get away!” we started establishing good relationship with him and he taught us a lot on machines.
April 1993
Thanks to the big hit of BIRKENSTOCK, our slub yarn mixed socks caught on in shops like “BEAMS” and “point”. Using this opportunity we had the company registered as a limited private company and it became possible to approach various big clients.
June 1993
The office was moved to a house owned by the factory next door. But we still got yelled at by the factory manager.
September 1993
With the start of the sneaker boom, we developed ankle socks thinking “make socks invisible!” although it was a style to wear Railroad Socks loosely. While many companies didn’t like the idea only BEAMS started selling them in shops in Tokyo. We had not named the socks until the buyer said “we can’t issue slips for products without names” at the business talk. Then we answered on site “these are socks covering ankle. So maybe ankle socks?”. But the sales didn’t go well with only few dozens of additional order a month. Facing piles of stocks we were whining “oh, it never works…”.
May 1994
When we almost gave up the ankle socks appeared in a magazine “Begin” as a recommended product of the month. Two days later we got a call from BEAMS for additional order. Now the history of Japanese socks changed. Our ankle socks became a big hit! We really appreciated we had never given up.
April 1996
The office was moved to Sendagi Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo. No more lodging.
1999
Ankle socks were made in China in large numbers and this forced us to face cost issues as we stuck to domestic production.
2003
As only ankle socks prevailed in men’s socks market, which we found boring, we started focusing on products for women.
2004-2005
With increased attention to knitted tights and knee-high socks produced with a socks machine, the boom of the women’s legwear started. We enjoyed this opportunity as we had put more weights on women’s products.
2007-2009
Taking advantage of women’s natural boom we showed our specialty to make products utilizing each material. All our ideas using cotton, linen, wool, hemp and other natural materials and eco yarn were well evaluated.
March 2009
Our original brand “CHUP” was displayed at the combined exhibition “JUMBLE” where we received high evaluation from various customers and made a good start.
